Let’s face it—your career is very demanding. People do not realize it but political careers rival Wall Street or high-dollar companies in their high-stakes nature. The humility you rightfully aspire to occasionally prevents you from seeing that; otherwise, you get by saying things like “it’s not that big a deal.” Still, day in and day out, you may feel like you are on the brink of a major failure.

The consequences are dire: major geopolitical events, billions of dollars, global headlines, thousands of lives, or the survival of movements centuries old may depend on each day’s success. The wrong pin on your jacket could make you a laughing stock—success, however, is most often rewarded with quiet survival.

“Office politics” may look more like spy vs. spy than Office Space, The Office, or Parks & Rec. Of course none of that is really going on...

People look to you as representatives of their most cherished values: freedom, responsibility, happiness, livelihood, justice, fairness, nation, identity, and life itself. As you become bombarded with millions of people’s views, aspirations, deflations, depression, pain and suffering, you may falter or question yourself. Am I right? Am I even a good person? Does being a good person matter anymore? Did it ever? Am I properly bearing the souls of movements past and present? What even is justice? A life worth living? Should society be a meritocracy and to what extent? Have I done my best? In the course of history, will any of this have mattered?

Many questions like these may throw you off our game. Their answers are at once superlatively deflating and inspiring.

We will speak with you on your daily experience, lofty questions such as those, and anything lawful you may think of. We keep our eyes on:

• Anonymity: Self Guide Coaches use data-scrambling technology, take only handwritten notes, and code them for their own purposes. Our policies prohibit coaches from being in audible places, talking without headphones, or using efficiency technology if security is sacrificed.
